Application Timeline

October 16, 2017-January 19, 2018 Language Placement Test

November 13, 2017-January 19, 2018 Application available.

Nov. 19-Dec. 1, 2017: No application fee
Dec. 2-Dec. 31, 2017: Application fee $25
Jan. 1-Jan.19, 2018: Application fee $50

February 12, 2018 Applicants will be notified of acceptance into the program
February 23, 2018 Program Deposit due $500*
April 23, 2018 Pre-departure orientation

Applicant Requirements

For Rice in Argentina, China, France, Japan, Korea, Russia:
1. Course level: Completion of college-level second semester target language by the end of Spring 2018.

a. RICE STUDENTS who successfully complete the 142 course associated with their target language during Spring 2018 at Rice University are exempt from taking the placement exam.

b. ALL APPLICANTS must take an online placement exam to determine their competence if they have not taken the applicable 142 course (available from October 16, 2017 to January 19, 2018).

2. Course grade: A grade of B in the last relevant language course taken during the previous two academic semesters (spring ‘17 and fall ‘17). If the applicant has not taken any language courses during those semesters, they must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and receive the appropriate placement in the required course level through the placement test.

3. Essay: (Maximum 500 words) Essay questions are included in the application.

4. Interview: After submitting the online application, applicants who meet the criteria will be contacted by the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication to attend either an in-person or Skype interview with the Faculty Leader of your respective Rice in Country program.


Selection Process

  • Criteria: The Faculty Leader for each Rice-in-Country program will review and rank applicants according to the compliance of the candidates with the basic requirements (GPA, previous course, etc.), as well as the assessment of their commitment and ability to fulfill the academic objectives of the study abroad programs.
  • Selection: The selection of the applicants admitted to the program will be made by a Selection Committee composed by all the Faculty leaders in charge of the programs offered by CLIC during summer 2018.

*A program deposit of $500 is due to secure your spot in the program. The deposit will be refunded upon successful completion of the Rice in Country program. In the event that a student voluntarily drops out of the program or if Faculty Leader or host institution needs to dismiss a student from the program, the deposit will not be refunded and the value of any CLIC scholarship will need to be reimbursed to the Center for Languages & Intercultural Communication. In the event that there is insufficient enrollment and the Rice in Country program is cancelled, the program deposit will be refunded.
